The new Advanced Plating USA "API" Vintage inspired Nonwire ABR-1 Replacement bridge!

Together with **Advanced Plating in Nashville, Tennessee**, we have completely revised and refined our new **API ABR-1 Bridge**, including its saddles and adjustment screws. The goal of this collaboration was to combine historically inspired construction with carefully selected materials and the experience gained from years of working with vintage guitar hardware.

At the heart of this development was an **original 1958 Gibson® ABR-1 Bridge**, which served as the master reference for our new bridge. The original bridge was carefully analyzed with particular attention to its **material composition and alloy**, as were the original vintage soft brass components. Based on these findings, the new API ABR-1 bridge body is manufactured from a **Zamak 5 alloy, just like the original vintage Gibson® ABR-1 bridges**. This specific alloy was deliberately chosen to reproduce the material characteristics of the vintage bridge as closely as possible.

Combined with our **Vintage Correct 360 Soft Brass saddles, screws, posts and thumbwheels**, the Zamak 5 bridge body forms the foundation of the complete API ABR-1 system. This combination of materials is essential to us because the bridge body and its individual brass components work together in the transfer of string vibration and contribute to the characteristic response, resonance and **tone for which original vintage Gibson® ABR-1 bridges are known**.

Rather than simply reproducing the dimensions and appearance of a vintage bridge, our goal was to recreate its fundamental **materials, construction and tonal character** as closely as possible.

The use of **Vintage Correct 360 Soft Brass** is particularly important for components such as **thumbwheels, bridge posts, screws and saddles**. These small parts are an integral part of the bridge assembly and can influence the way string vibration is transferred through the hardware.

360 brass offers the characteristic material properties associated with traditional vintage-style brass components. Its comparatively soft and resonant character helps reproduce the **response and tonal behavior associated with original vintage Gibson® thumbwheels, screws, posts and saddles** – with a lively attack, natural resonance and a warm, open tonal character.

For our **API Type 2 Saddles**, we deliberately chose a slightly wider saddle contact area. In our experience, this design produces a **slightly fuller and more substantial tonal response**, while retaining the openness and natural resonance we expect from vintage-correct 360 brass.

By comparison, our **Type 1 1957 Style Saddles**, with their narrower vintage-style geometry, tend to deliver a somewhat more immediate and **snappy response**. The Type 2 design was therefore a conscious choice for players looking for a little more body and fullness without losing the characteristic vintage response of a traditional ABR-1 style bridge.

Unlike many modern replacement parts manufactured from harder alloys or generic materials, API Soft Brass Parts are developed specifically with vintage authenticity in mind. Material selection, dimensions and machining are carefully matched to the requirements of historically inspired guitar hardware.

For us, **“Vintage Correct” means more than simply reproducing the appearance of an old part. The material matters – and so does the geometry.** Even subtle differences in material, dimensions and contact surfaces can contribute to the response and character of a bridge.

We also deliberately give our saddles **slightly rounded edges and contours** rather than leaving them with the noticeably sharp edges often found on newly manufactured saddles. This is a conscious API detail designed to provide a **more comfortable playing feel**, especially for players whose picking hand rests on or frequently comes into contact with the bridge.

The result combines **vintage-correct material and construction with carefully considered playing comfort**. We believe that a replacement part should not only look and sound right – it should also feel right.
